What is iOS 16?

iOS 16 is Apple’s latest version of the iOS mobile operating system that supports iPhone devices and new iOS 16 features has been introduced at Apple’s WWDC’22 conference and it would be available in September 2022. iOS includes features and performance improvements available for various iOS devices. Check the list below to see if your device will work with iOS 16.

This new version of iOS includes a whole new lock screen design, widgets, new developer APIs, and many new features of interest to developers, business customers, and consumers.

Which devices are compatible with iOS 16?

Most iOS 15-compatible devices will also support iOS 16. Here is the full list of devices supported by iOS 16:

What’s New in iOS 16 features: All features you need to know

iOS 16 improves iPhone with all-new personalization features, deeper intelligence, and seamless ways to communicate and share.

Lock screen:

Apple redesigned the entire lock screen in iOS 16, here you can personalize your lock screen with your favorite photo, add filters and widgets, and change the date and time font. Widgets and Live Activities let you easily connect to information from your favorite apps and get real-time updates. Notifications appear at the bottom of your lock screen and can be viewed in a number of ways. You can also build many lock screens and swap between them.

Focus Mode and filters:

Customize how you want to use your iPhone right now by associating focus with your lock screen. Focus Mode can automatically set a specific lock screen configuration, so you can have a dedicated lock screen for work, driving, or other activities.

Extends focus filters to Apple and third-party apps like Calendar and Messages to block distracting content.

iCloud Shared Photo Library: (iOS 16.1)

Share your photo and video library with up to five family members using Shared iCloud Photo Library. A participant can add photos to the shared library from the personal library, directly from the camera, or if other shared library members are nearby.

Message:

Edit the message you just sent, stop sending it, or mark it as unread if you want to come back to it later. Collaborate on notes, reminders, and other files you share directly in Messages. Chat with your friends via SharePlay in Messages while you watch the latest episodes of your favorite shows or listen to new songs.

Mail:

You can unsend emails you just sent, schedule emails to be sent at a specific time, and get reminders to follow up on emails and come back later. Email search results are now more accurate, with suggestions before you even start typing.

Map:

Add multiple stops to your itinerary. Add and top up your public transport card and see the total cost of your trip in one place.

Safari:

Share tab groups, send messages, and initiate FaceTime calls directly from Safari.

Visual lookup:

Remove the background to make the subject stand out from the background of the photo or image, then copy the subject into a new document.

Live text:

Now available for videos – you can pause your video on any frame with text to copy, translate, search, share, and more. Quick Actions make it easy to work with photos, videos, and in-camera text. Depending on what the photo or video is about, you can tap Quick Actions at the bottom of the screen to make a call, get directions, translate languages, convert currency, and more, for example.

Wallet:

Track Apple Pay purchases made in-app and online at merchants, and view your ID in-app to verify your identity.

Health:

Use the Medications feature to manage your medications, vitamins, and supplements. Invite your loved ones to securely share your Health app data.

Fitness:

The Fitness app helps you set and reach fitness goals, even if you don’t have an Apple Watch. Track your steps, distance, and workouts to estimate the calories that contribute to your daily exercise goals. To access video and audio workouts and guided meditations, subscribe to Apple Fitness+ (iOS 16.1).

Home:

The redesigned Home app makes it easy to navigate, organize, view, and control all your accessories. Categories for lighting, air conditioning, security, speakers, TV, and water give you quick control over related accessories organized by room and more detailed status information.

Family Sharing:

Use your iPhone to set up a new device for your child with parental controls and age-appropriate media restriction suggestions. Receive and approve your child’s Screen Time requests directly in the Messages app.

Privacy and Security:

Use Security Checker to review and reset the access you’ve given others, reset system privacy permissions for apps, and restrict Messages and FaceTime usage per device. Hidden and recently deleted albums in the Photos app are locked by default and can be unlocked using your iPhone’s authentication method.

Accessibility:

Use door detection to locate doors, see how far they are, and learn how to open them to navigate the last few feet to your destination. Convert audio to text in real-time to make conversations and media easier to understand, or use your iPhone’s assistive features to control your Apple Watch.

Photo:

Copy changes made to one photo and paste them to another photo or multiple photos. Quickly clean up your library with duplicate detection, sort people alphabetically in the People album, and undo and redo changes.

Notes:

Create quick notes in any app on your iPhone, lock notes with your device’s password, and filter notes in smart folders based on creation date, attachments, checklists, and more.

Reminders:

Save, create, or share lists as templates for routines like packing or grocery lists. Pin your favorites list for easy access and collaborate on lists with others.

Stocks:

Organize the stocks you follow into watchlists and stay on top of upcoming earnings reports.

News:

Stay up to date on teams, leagues, and athletes on Apple News with My Sports.

Memoji:

Express yourself with new Memoji stickers and customization options like nose shapes, hats, and hairstyles for more natural hair textures and curl patterns.

Translate:

Translate the surrounding text with the translation app’s camera. Read translations overlaid on text in photos, zoom in to see details, and translate text from your photo library to photos.

Weather:

Get details on forecasted conditions such as air quality, humidity, and UV index. View hourly forecasts for the next 10 days and receive notifications such as severe weather alerts issued by the government.
