Apple has announced macOS Ventura and iPadOS 16. This, along with their recently released iOS 16, watchOS 9, and tvOS 16 updates for iPhone, Apple Watch, and Apple TV, comes months after both operating systems updates were announced in June.
Apple plans to release iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura on October 24, the company confirmed Tuesday, among other announcements.
iPadOS 16 – What’s new for iPads
With the new update of Stage Manager, switching between tasks and apps becomes easier. The Stage Manager will be available now for M1 And M2- based iPads and Macs. The feature was previously only compatible with the M1-equipped iPad Air and last year’s 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models, but it will be also available on the 3rd and 4th generation iPad Pro models and later as well. However, these iPads will not get support for external displays. iPadOS 16 also brings desktop-class apps to iPad, including the new Weather app, News, and more.
macOS Venture – What’s new for Macs
The Stage Manager automatically organizes apps and windows that allow users to drag and drop windows from the side or open apps from the Dock to create app groups. The window of the app the user is working on, appears in the center, with other open apps and windows on the left ordered by newest first.
This feature also works on macOS Ventura and creates a sort of sidebar where the rest of your open apps reside. Windows is organized by stacks, cluttered desktop files disappearing into the ether. When the window is minimized, it goes to this left sidebar instead of the toolbar.
In addition to the Stage Manager, macOS Ventura also has a feature called Continuity Camera that lets you use your iPhone as a webcam for FaceTime calls on Macs when you download Ventura on macOS and iOS 16 on compatible devices. Additionally, a similar email retraction feature has been added to the Messages app on Mac. In particular, System Settings has been renamed to Settings and has a new look.
Along with the iPad (10th generation) and two new iPad Pro tablets, Apple announced that the pair will begin shipping on October 24, with iPadOS 16 obtainable before the new iPads start shipping. In other words, their trio of iPads today should all have the latest version of his iPadOS.
According to Apple, iPadOS 16 supports all iPad Pro models, as well as iPad Air 3, iPad 5, iPad mini 5 and newer. Perhaps the biggest change between iPadOS 15 and iPadOS16 is the Stage Manager, which is compatible with all iPad Pro models released after 2018 and the latest iPad Air. Additionally, iPadOS 16 improves support for external monitors on iPad and integrates dedicated Weather and Matter apps into the Home app.
macOS Ventura is compatible with all iMac, MacBook, and MacBook Pro models announced after 2017. Conversely, support for the Mac mini and MacBook Air is backdated to 2018, and all Mac Pro machines sold before 2019 have been discontinued. As with iPadOS 16, macOS supports Ventura Stage Manager and a dedicated Weather app. Apple has also ported the Watch app to macOS and revamped the Spotlight search feature. macOS Ventura also supports camera handoff, which Apple demonstrated earlier this year. The delayed release of iPadOS 16 forced Apple to break with its tradition of releasing new software for iPhone and iPad for the first time in years. However, there are rumors that iOS 16.1 will be released on October 24th, so the release schedule could be synced up.
